"Race Against The Clock' Event
NAPIER MEETING Close finishes wer© witnessed in a majority of the races at a well-attenied meeting of the Napier Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at McLean Park last night. There was a good enfcry of oompetitors for all races and times were well up to standard. Oue of the most interesting events of the evening was the' "race aagpin&t the clock" hy four of the club's laad, ing cyclist® V. Engert, P. Dooney, J. Hutchinson and W. Williams. The clock, inaking its first appearance for 12 months, has now been remodelled. The clock was set at 35 seconds for the first cyclist, and subsequently altei'ed to the times recorded by the preceding performers, and as the spectators had f clear view of the ia:ge face of the clock, intense excitemcnt prevailed at the attempts of each man jbo beat th.e time set hy his opponents. It was amnounced that the attempt hy Ian Driscoll on tbe New Zealand reoord for the two-mile walk,. is now to be made on February 8. Driscoll, who has been training hard for the event, showed np well in the walk for the evening, which was over the onemile distance.
