"NEAR BANKRUPTCY"

-Press Association.)

Orchardists Who Don't Pay Carriers

(By Telegraph-

NELSON, Last Night "I think- the bulk of fruitgrowers aTS practically on the verge of bankruptcy, the small grower anyway," remarked a carrier when pxamined at a meeting of No. 3 transport licensing authority as to the large amount of outstanding debts shown on his balanee-sheet. He said last year he cut a number of grow* ers out and was going to cut more out this year. Witness said strong representations had been made to the Fruitgrowers' Federation for carriers to be paid by them but they did notfjet any satisfaction. They had asked the federation to deduct a portion of the Government grant which included an amount for payment of cartage. The chairman, Mr T. Langford, said it. seemed an unjust sifuation. The number ,of: sundry debtors in the balance-sheets was outrageous. There was something xadically wrong. As the Minister said reeently the fruit ittdustry was in a chaotie stat.e. He was trying to get all the informatiop he . could to hand on to the Minister and the carriers seemed j:o be largely concerned. _jy ' -
