Mr Theodofe RdoseVelt (dofi of a formef President of the United Stfites) delivering the Watsoii Lectlire iat the London University, vigorotiSly coffi.mented on the ctirreiit topic of cdlonies, declarxng that it WaS custdmary for America to explain her foxnrer ' 1 open door" policy towards immigrants as an altruistic desire fd give a haven to the oppressed, while Britain pleaded the urge to take up "the white man's burden" to explain the aCquisition of colonies. Both statements were insiiiCere* Britain seized eolonies for material gain and America permitted free immigration becauSe indUstrialists saW that the infioW of eheap labour woiild increase their profits. But they were ufiawaife that sueh immigrfitidn Was to create endless future problemS. ■ Colonies in many instances Were a continuous loss or a doubtful economits asset. Italy had spent 1,300,000,000 more lire controlling her colonies from 1913 to 1932 than she got iii grosS trade dtiring 40 years. The German reeord was a similar story and it was much the same fof Ftance and Japan. Britain 's reeord was much better largely oWiiig to Dominion trade.
