Maoris in Northland Area complaint to minister
(By Teiesraoh-
WHANGAREI, Jan. 30. The Hon. F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, who has been touring Northland for the past week, is now in the extreme north, where he is investigating the position of the indigent settlement of Maoris at Tahapua, on Parengarenga Bay. Yesterday lie inspected the Maori settlement at Ahipara, ten miles west of Kaitaia. The area under the consolidation schem© consists of 2264 acres carrying 586 cows, 204 heifers, 3J bulls aud '33 working horses. Good progress was reported, but one leader complained that young Maoris were being taken from the land m order to obtain the attractive wages offered by the Public Works Department. He declared that they were spending their money on liquor instead of improving their land, and suggested the oancellation of licences in the district. Other speak'ers pleaded for the retention of young men on the land and the prqvision of bett^r housing.
