RATE PAYMENTS
Borough Receives Quarter of Amouni Levied TOWN CLERK SATISFIED A quarter of the rates levie'd by the Hastings Borough Council have now been paid in, and, with just over a fortnight to go before the 10 per cent penalty for fate paymenjb is inflicted, a rush of payments is expected. When the Borough Council offiees closed yesterday a-fternoon a total of £10,403 11/6 had been paid in rates, leaving balance of £32,000 yet to come in. The total rate levied is £42,370 O/LO, and, jf previous figures are any guide, a practically 100 per cent payment is anticipated. Last year ihe payment was 96 per cent of the amount levied, and in addijbion, arrears were considerably reduoed. If a corresponding reduction is effected this year the Hastings borough finances will be in a particularly healthy condition, comparing more than favourably with the majority of "boroughs in the Dominion. To the "Herald-Tribune" this morning, the Hastings Town Clerk, Mr. Noel Harding, expressed his satisfaction at the way in whicji the rate payments were being made. "They are coming in yery well," he stated. "and we anticipate that- from now until the.- final day there will be a steady thickening in the payments."
