Murpby, once a resident of Napier, but now a member of tbe teaching staff of tbe Otahuhu Tecbnical idigk frfcbool, Auckland district, is at present visiting Hawke's Bay and is tbe guest of Mr. J. Keys, Maraetotara. Tbe Rev. D. N. and Mrs McDiarmid are spendmg a koliday at Taupo, and will reuirn to Napier on Saturday next. Tlie Rev. He will remain in New Zealand until February 5, when be will return to Australia. Mr W. G. Cooper, who bas been appointed Chief Postmaster at Auckland, was, witb Mrs Cooper, entertained by tbe combined staffa of tbe Wanganui brancb of tbe Post and Telegrapb De* partment last week. The celebration of Mr Cooper promotion took the form of a social evening, during whicb a chiming clock wae present'ed to the guests of kononi-. On the recommendation of tbe Academic Board, tbe Senate of tbe University of New Zealand conferred tbe honorary degree of D.Se. upon Dr. Peter Buck, director of tbe Bishop Museum, Honolulu. He is the first Maori to receive an honorary degree and tbe fourth recipient to receive tbe bonour at tbe hands of the> New Zealand University. — Press Asesn. Mr. Frank W. Dossett, who bas terminated his association with tbe management of tbe Masonic Hotel, Napier, was met by members of tbe staff on Saturday and presented witb a fountain pen and pencil as a token of the esteem in whicb be had been beld by membex-s of tbe staff. Tbe bead porter, Mr. H. Skews, wbo made tbe presentation, voieed the regret of tbe hotel staff at Mr. Dossett 's resignation and wisbed him tbe best of success and bappiness in his new position as manager of tbe Hastings Hotel. Mr. Skew's remarks were endorsed by Mr. S. Johnson. In his reply, Mr. Dossett thanked members on tbe staff for their loyal service during tbe past four years of his association witb tbe hotel. Tbe Very Eev. Fatker M. J. Dowling, S.M., has been appointed rector of St. Bede5s College. The Very Eev. Father A. L. Burger, S.M., who has bejn raetor of tbe college since 1931, has been transferred to tbe staff of St. Patrick's College, Silverstream, Wellington. The Eev. Fatber A. J. Cullen, S.M., at present at Temuka, and a former rector of St. Patfick's College, Wellington, will join tbe staff of the college as vice-reetor, Other additions to the staff are Fatbers J. Bell, S.M., D. Maher, S.M., and I. Gupwell, S.^J. Father Dowling was for some time at tbe Marist Seminary at Greenmeadows.
