(Received 23, 9.15 ».m.) ADELAIDE, Jan. 22. Cloudy weather gave way to brilliant sunshine for the England-Soutb Australia match. The wicket was eaay. Alien won the toss. The highlight of the day'i play was the race between Bainett and Ham mond for the honour of scoring a thouand runs in first-class cricket this sea^ son. Barnett won with only 15 minutes to spare. England were fortunate to get a start oi 96 from Barnett and Fiehlock Both men were missed, Barnett when seven and Fishlock at 11. Barnett was dropped a second time at 48. Cotton bowled at a terrific pace after lunch and had all the batemen in difficulties. South Australia struck a purpla patch before tea when Hammond, Leyland and Barnett were bundied out in quick time. Hammond played a weak stroke to an express delivery from Cotton and fikied the bali, giving Ward an easy catch. Leyland paid the penalty for recklessness in hitting against Grimmett . Barnett played many brilliant shota. He was at the wicketa for 75 minutes and hit six fours. He went out to a maanificent catch by Bradman. Barnett jumped out for a vigoroug on drive. Bradman "raced in the aamn direction as the flight oi the ball and took the catch as the bal] dropped within reach. There were few thrilla in the day's play. England went along ateadily, the first 50 taking 66 minutes with the same for the second and tie third in 61. Wyatt and Ameg put dash into the game, scoring 50 in 54 minutes. The fcjouth Australian attack was acourate except Ward who fell short of a good length. Fieiding lapses increased the burden on th© bowlers. •»- . Grimmett, Waite and Cotton etuck to their task gamely, proving too good for the later English batsmen. Ames was beaten badly by a ball from Grimmett and Robins gave an easy chance off Cotton before providing Walker with a catch. England s 239 for six wickets was a poor ett'ort especially as they reproeented the majority of the team for the fourtb Test.
