■Owtl Correspondent.)

Mister Quex's Ashhurst Double Success INCREASED RECEIPTS

(By Telegraph—

' PALMERSTON N., Jan. 22. The annual race meeting of the Ash-hurst-Pohangina Racing Club was held to-day on the Ashhurst racecouTse bejfore a very large attendance. The weather was. fine, but a boisterous wind made matters a little unpleasant. The racing thrqughout was first class, three very close finishes being staged, but the riding exhibited was not of a very high standard and in more than one instance beaten horses better served would undoubtedly have been successful. All the receipta showed a substantial increase on recent years, with the gates ovdr £200 up on last year's takings and the totalisator, which handled £13,689 agaidst £8885, showiHg an increase of £4804. Results: — HACK HURDLES Of £100; 1$ mile. 4 MISS HUSHABYE, Mr J. O. Houlinan's br. m. by Machineel — Hushabye, aged, 9.0 (S. Wright), 1 3 Midacre, Mrs J. M. Blue Tiger made a forward move by the time they had turned into the back stretch, and the aforementxoned quartette by this time were the only ones who looked Iike having a chance of success. * With half a mile to go, •Miss Hushabye was still in front from Midacre, while Count Willonyx had improved into third position. * This order was unchanged into the straight. At the last fence Blue Tiger jumped poorly to go down on his knees. Miss •Hushabye won by a neck in .the run home from Midacre with Count Willonyx three lengths back third aed Monarchy fourth. Time, 2.48 2-5. POHANGINA HANDICAP Qf £120; 6 furlongs. 3 ROYAL SECRET, Mr E. G. Gardiner's ch. m. by King Lu — Elope, 6yrs.; 9.0, car. 8.9 (G. Lavina led again entering the straight, but with heads turned for home Notium and Royal Seeret put in their challeuges and in an interesting finish Royal Seeret won decisively by a length from Notium, who-lost a little ground in the run home, with Lavina a further length back a head in. front of Bodyline. There was little change in this running order to the half -mile, except . that Davistock and Grand Jury began to make up the leeway. At the three-fur-long post Orac was still in front, but at this stage. Master , Cyklon went right back to last. Into the straight Ora,c still held the lead from Round Score, Blue Garter and Pango, while Grand Jury was fourth on the outside. The latter soon asserted ; himself to take over the lead from Pango, with Blue Garter and Round Score retiring, but Master Cyklon .was .eoming again. Grand Jury, finishing best, won by a length and a-half from Pango who was a similar distance ahead of Master Cyklon, Davistock being fourth.
