However, to soine extent the day was marrod hy a very rough wind, me or two of the tenta having to oe takea down and re-erected in more Bheltered places. There is a ttuch larger attendance than last year and there are also more entries in most of the classes, with the exception of the schools section, which seems t* have heen affected by the earlier closing of the schools. Another event which appealed very much to the general public was the tree-felling or jigger chop in the axemen's eompetitions, while the sporting fraternity was well catered for by the boxing competitions and the greyhound xacing. A silver challenge cup, donated to the Hawke 's Bay Centre for presentation to the competitor securing zcoBt points in the axemen 's events throughout the Hawke 's Bay and Wai-

rarapa centres, was presented for the £rst time by Mr H. H. Fraser, of Timaru, the Bomim'on president of the Kew Zealand Axemen 's Union, the winter 'for 1936 heing N. Hancock, of Kapier. Th'e judging was done expeditiously, and the announcements made through the loud-speaker system were very clear and could be heard eaeily at all paris •f the grounds. Mr Eeg. Cook, the secretary, and the various officials who assisted him are to he congratulated on th8 systematic and amooth running of the show. Evidences of the general increase of prosperity were to be seen in the numbers of people who patronised Ihe eide•hows and refreshment booths.
