The . strong winds experienced xu Hastings yesierday and to-day must have brought a number of converta lu the hatless brigade, the wearing ot a hat under the windy conditions provailing was a greater eource of annoyance tnan of comfort. To the Hawke's Bay citizen not hardened to the westerly blast, the qxperience was a trying one. To-uay in partioular there were mauy »taid citizens who were forced to in. dulge in a ehage after their elusive headgear, some being less fortunate ihan others. One gentleman who was oxi the Hastings railway station platform yesterday afternopn had his hat blown off and under the wheels of the incoming train and the hat— a panama— fared worst in the encounter. On the f arm also the wind is causfng inconvenience, as it is delaying harvesting and threshing operations. Oue Hastings contraetor told a MHeraldTribune" reporter this morning that thp wind wag interf ering with the threshing, as the cocks were being blown "all over the plaee," The heat to-day was not so trying as yesterday, when, with the temperature reaching a maximum of 85 degreeB, and the westerly wind drying the atmosphere, WQrk was a warm and not too pleasant ta-sk foy those who were not recexving the Anniversary Day holiday. For the holiday-maker the day was good, and, although a lull in .the wind would have been weleome, those at the . beach and pienicking in the eountry a'lJ enjoyed themselves.
