Mr J. D.Perrett

The death occurred of Mr J. Douglas Perrett at the age of 78. One of New Zealand's. outstanding landscape artists, Mr Perrett came to New Zeaiand from Scotland 45 years ago and ..or a time liyed in Dunedin. He opened an artists' school and was soon Well known throughout the Dominion for the quality of his work. Mr Perrett later went to live at Wanganui, « and afterwards at Devonport, whel'e he tesided until his death. Some oi the artist's work is kung in the Auckland Art Gallery. His dfawings of the pink and white terraces are among the finest in existence, the artist having just completed his work when the Tarawera eruption Occurred. Vlr Perrett was particularly good at uastel work, and at depicting Nature m her cairn and' placid moods. There was an atmosphere about his painting which marked him as a lover of Nature in every phase. Mr Perrett was a former well-known .uember of the Auckland Bowling Club. rle was a member of the provincial cbampion rink of 1906 and in his vounger days achieved success as a swimmer. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs u. g. Lipscombe, of Christchurch, and lour sons, Messrs R. Perrett} of Auckland, and J. D., H. G., and H. S. Periett of Devonport.
