WELLINGTON, Jan. *21.
"After I have had an opportunity of considering this and allied cases I take th© view that, except in the case of young boys or in exCeptional circumstanqes, deserters must know that rhey hav© to start in New Zealand with a term of imprisonment," said Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., when John William Wellington, aged 34, seaman, appeared before him, pleading guilty to deserting from the Rangitane. The police stated that th© shipping company was exercised about the frequency of desertions, and a representative of th© company said that if a ,nari went to the master of his ship and asked to he paid off there was no reason why this should not be done if the man could b© replaced, but the defendant and a man who deserted with him left without explanation a. few minutes before sailing time. A term of a month' s imprisonment was imposed.
