SANCTUARY FACILITIES

Scheme For Tree-Planting Improvementa shortly to be carried out at Cape Kidnappers near the -gannet sanctuary, include the planting with native trees and shrubs of the area set aside for the purpose in the improvement scheme inaugurated by the Cape Kidnappers Sanctuary Board. The board wish.es donations of native trees, particularly pohutukawa and puriri, to further its purpose. It has been found that the rabbits, which are plentiful in the locality, eat all manner of small trees, and as the board considerg tbat tbe trees it proposes planting would be a temptation to the rabbits, it has been decided that the plantation must first be enclosed by wire netting, well sunk in the g(round. Tbe money necessary for tbe work, while not now at hand, is expected to be provided from the box placed at Clifton to receive- donations from visitors. A. deficit of £12 on the work in connection with the shelter hut at the foot of the cliff track has alxeady been wiped out from the donations from this box. Repairs on the track to the sanctvary are not considered necessary, apart from some minor exceptions, and improvements at the sanctuary will be ooncentrated mainly pn the planting of the trees. It is proposed that'a work'ing bee make a trip to the site one •vening with food and blankets, and spend a night at the shelter hut, so that all the following day could be devoted to the work.
