BROKERS' REPORTS
Details of Individual Offerings Ti# selling brokers report upon their sale*' and give individual prices for selected lots as follow: — MTJRRAY, ROBERTS & CO., LTD. Murray, Boberts and Co., Ltd., xeport oh th© eecond wool sale as follows:— Much interest had heen centred on the opening sale of the New Yeax recently held in "Wellington in so far as Japanit*o competition was concerned, as it waa felt in wool circles that the resumption of buying on their behalf in Australia may have spme influence on prices in the Dominion, However, re» porta indicated that vthre was no let up in their purchasing power, and this, tqgether with strong competition from the Continent, Bradford, and America, was the mean's of prices being forced up still higher than those ruling in the December sale* This position waa also Teflected in the market here to-day. Our catalogue consisted of some very nice lines, but the showing could not compare witli the opening sale held early in December, and this of course must be taken into account when making a comparison of prices. We consider hogget and fleece wools appreciated on an average 13d, while
skirtings were ld to 2d higher. Lambs' wool showed a rise of 2d and crutchings, which were in exceptional demand, were also 2d higher, Included in our catalogue were 900 bales of binned wool, all of which was eagerly sought after. We experienced a total clearance under the hammer. Some of the prices realised in our catalogue were:— 7B: A 16f, C 173d. WILLIAMS & KETTLE, LTD. Williams and Kettle report as follow:: — ^We held our second sale of the wool season on Satui'day. The allocation for Napier was 30,000 bales, and of this quantity our catalogue comprised 5594 bales. The wool offered was generally not quite so bright as that offered in December, no doubt d.ue to the rain during shearing. Still we had some exceptionally nice pareels. Buying interes^s were fully represented and the bidding was very much more spread than at the first sale. Bradford has now come into the market very much more than at the beginning of the season with the result that they lifted a considerable weight of wooL The Continent was very active for necks, pieces and bellies and all fleece wools suitable for their requirements, their purchases being very considerable. American and Canadian orders were prominent and there was excellent competition for their types. The Japanese, as far as our catalogue is concerned, appeared to be almost out of the market. Local mills and ecourers also lifted a fair quantity of wool. As compared with the first sale prime wool appeared to be aasier, and this is probably accounted Lor by the laek of Japanese competition, For medium and coarse crossbred the market shows considerable improvernent. The same applies for all. skirtings. As far as lambs is concerned we had hardly enough at the first sale to make comparison, but we think values here ure also definitely up. We sold the' whole catalogue under the hammer. The following are- some of our prineipal rates; and we would draw attention to prices obtained for our pooled wools: — TH (John Tait): XE 153d. H.B. FARMERS ' CO-OP. The Hawke's Bay Farmers ' Cooperative Assoeiation, Ltd., report. — ■ At the second wool sale of the season held in Napier there was a large offering of 30,371 bales, to which we contributed 6032 bales. These included 2048 bales of wools pooled and offered" under the H.B.F.Co-op. brand, or o± wools reelassed by us on owner's behalf and offered under their own brands. There was a full bench of ouyers, representative of ail the leaduig consuming centres, and the avidity with which they absorbed this large offering shows the hungry state that the whole world is in for wool at the present. There has been a considerable hardening of prices at the saies throughout the Dominion since our December sale, as well as in Australia and London. It was no surprise therelore to find tlie advance carried further on Saturday and topping all preeeding saies of the season. Buying was well spread, - but the strongest support came from America, the Continent, Bradford and Japan. Australian and Dominion mills were not so prominent as in the previous sale though their competition usefully accentuated the advances realised on their particular types. The most striking feature of the sale was the keen competition on the coarser aDd lower grades and on crutchings, which show an advance of 2d per lb. The higliest price paid in our catalogue was for a Jine of five bales Southdown of the Weber brand 011 account of Mrs E. Hales which realised 23d. Fine wools generally did not show the same appreciation in values but medium erof.s- * breds were 13d higher than at last sale. Compared with the January sale last vear prices show an advance for good average fleece wool of practicall.v 100 pcr cent. The display in our stores, on the whole, was quite a good one. There were not a great number of suDer clips,
many falling just short of that class, but they could be termed good epinner'e wools. The bulk of the offering was more suitable ior the toptnaking trade and the Coutiuent. The wool handled quite yreft^ and, it is apparent that growers are endeavouring to improve the quality of their clips. Condition was heavier than that at 'the December offering, when tho earlyT jhorn wool fropi the dry skeep and noggets was on view. DALGETY AND CO., LTD. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., reporfc as follows:— The second Napier wool sale was held on Saturday, when brokers offered approximately 30,380 bales. Our ehare of the offering was 5000 bales, all of which were sold under the hammer. The selection was not quite as attraetive as at the December sale, there being not so many of the cleau, bright hogget wools offering. However, the offering was a very useful one and some beautiful wools were included. The bidding was much keener than at the first sale, the purchasers being more distributed. In contrast with the first sale, Japan was right out of the market, but to compensate for this Bradford, the Continent and America were very active. Germany was stronger than she has been for some considerable fime. Compared with the first sale, extra fine crossbreds showed little variation. In some instances they wero a shade easier, but coarse wools of all descriptions m the grease were 13d to 2d higher. Many growers are wondering why their B and C wools are malcing more money than their A lines. The reason for this is that America has reduced the tariff on the stronger wool and can therefore pay more for this description than she can for finer wool with the tariff on. How long this will last nobody can tell, but they are evidently very short of coarse wools suitable for the carpet trade. Present prices for crutchings are as high as we can remember. There is very little we can report on. a sale lilce this, as the prices spealc for themselves. One thing we should like to bring before the notice of growers is the prevalence of red and blue raddle stains in the wool. Some really super lines were absolutely spoilt
by tho ejcessive use of raddle, as buy ers cannot value this wool for spper orders because tho mills axe very pftt* ticular regarding _ this matter, "Wt strongly recowmend growers to Te. member this when tempted to use raddle in the yards. We know it cannot be avoided in ©very case, but judging frpn» some fleeces the aheep- must haye bees marked from head to tq.il, Regarding the remaihing saies ^fo* this season, the prospects are certain' ly bright, as ao many oountries are in need of wool.
