Tourney Opens After HoldUp by Rain VERY GOOD ENTRIES

WAIPAJWA, Jan. 17. After being postponed because of the heavy rain experienced on Friday last, the Waipawa Tennis Club's annual open tournament began this morning in giorious sunshine. The courts were in excellent condition, although heavy rain last evening had made ths surface rather slippery. With the aid of a light breeze they driecl rapidly and in the afternoon were playing excellently. Very good entrios have been received, and with favourable weather during the next few days the tournament should be most successful. The officials condueting the tournament are: — Referee, Mr Trevor Black; tournament secretary, Mr B. O. Gamby; tournament committee, Messrs F. M. Tickner, H. O. Collett, T. Black, E. W. Jull and D. H. Edwards. A number of players are still engaged in the finals at the Dannevirke tournament, so that the number of games completed so far is not as great as had been hoped. Results at the close of the day's play were: — MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. J. Riddell beat Dr, Norris, 6 — 1, 6—0. V. Douglas beat H. Tonks by defiault. MEN' CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES Moorhead and Riddell beat Fraser and L. Anderson, 6 — 4, 8 — 6. (WOMEN 'S CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Miss Holmes and Mrs Moore beat Misses M. and J. Wall, C — 3, 6 — 4.
