(Eeceived January 18, 8.45 a.m.) DETEOIT, Jan. 17. Vines defeated Perry, 14 — 12, 6 — 2, 6 — 1. The extended first set really decided the match, as Parry was ne^er able to make his shot count after the American took the lead in the twentyfiftk game. The American had full control of his ground shots, and frequently manoeuvred the Briton out of osition for a fast placement. Vines had set point in the twentyfourth game at 40—15, only to see his opponent score a placement, force him into errors and pull out the game. The Californian wasted no time in winning his service in the next ggme, and then, with the score 30 — 3o in the e^rtnysixth game, came the break that ended the exhausting set. One of Perry 's drives was a net-cord shot but kicked out of the court, and, with set point again, Vines drove a hard placement.. . .Perry could win only 19 points in the Becond set, and 13 in the third. ..Vines and Barnes beat Perry and Lott, 9—7,6 ■ A. . • ...... « ■ ••
