HAWERA ASSEMBLY

PRESENTATION OP TROPHIES

St. Joseph’s Hall presented a gay scene last night on the occasion oi the annual ball of the Hawera Swimming Club at which visitors were present in large numbers from all over the district and from places outside the province. The hall was voted a great success. 1 , The central colour scheme was black and gold, the colours of the club, with a subsidiary effect in green and gold, a network of streamers being scolloped from the centre and done to the walls, while ilowers and greenery added to the general effect. On the stage, besides ferns and greenery, the club’s banner and emblems w sport were exhibited. On. the tables in the supper room the club colon it? were displayed down the centre, set off with autumn blooms and streamers were suspended above. The arrangements in the hands of the committee and the hon. secretary (Miss B. Stevens) were made most efficiently. The ladies’ committee was Mesdames J. N. Anderson (convener), Misses 1 . Murray, J. AlcGlashan and B. Stevens (,hon. secretary) and the men s committee Messrs W. A. Spragg (president), A. Ryan, G. McGlashan, M. R. Nelson and M. Good. Mr. !>. G. Ryan was M.O. for the evening. During the evening the trophies won during the season were presented by the president, who congratulated the club on the successful season and the winners of trophies on their acnie\ oments. At the Taranaki championship he said the club was successful m winning the banner for the third time since its. inception, obtaining outpoints, Fitzroy being next with -7 points. Hawera secured thirteen firsts, six seconds and four thirds and two records were broken by Hawera s rummers —p. O. Vcale and Miss K. Donald The captain’s team was successful' in winning the club banner from the vice-captain’s team and there had been keen competition in the races lor the two cups, senior and junior, resulting in a tie and a narrow margin in points between first and second xoi most of the trophies. Successful carnivals were held during the season, the visit of the Wanganui team creating keen interest. The men s polo team was the runners-up for the bourn Division championship while two members, ' Ryan and Anderson, secured places in the Taranaki team. Duryos the season no fewer than 1083 certificates were applied for by school pupils, 639 in North Taranaki—2o2 in dlaivera .schools and 242 m south eountrv schools.
