Rain interfered with county cricket matches and bowlers reaped a harvest of wickets. The results are: Surrey beat Essex. —Surrey in the first innings made 268 (Hobbs 85). Essex in the first innings made 66 (Gower six wickets for 17) and followed on making 102 (Fender eight for 29). Surrey won by an innings and 100 runs. J Northamptonshire beat Somerset. — | Somerset in the first innings made 141 (Jupp six wickets for 09) and in the second 167 (Jupp four for 42). Northants in the first innings made 246 (Wellarc! four for 35) and in the second iost two for 63. Northants won by eight wickets. Kent drew with Warwick.—Kent in the first innings lost six wickets for 403 and declared (Valentine 164). Warwick in the first innings last two wickets for 63. The match was drawn. Worcester beat Leicester. —Leicester in the first innings made 271 (Astill 89) and in the second 71 (Perks took five wickets for 28, Perry five for 42). Worcester in the first innings made 175 (Astill four for 38) and in the second lost eight for 169 (Smith took seven wickets for 58). Worcester won by two wickets. Yorkshire heat Gloucester. —Yorkshire in the first innings made 277 and in the second 153 (Goddard took eight wickets' for 77). Gloucester in the first innings made 144 (Verity took six wickets for 55) and in the second 135 (Bowes took eight wickets for 69). Yorkshire won by 101 runs. Lancashire beat Glamorgan.—Glamorgan in the first innings made 133 and in tljo second lost none for 21. Lancashire in the first innings lost three for 159 and declared. Lancashire won on the first innings. Nottinghamshire beat Derbyshire.—• Notts in the first innings lost four wickets for 408 and declared (Keeton 86, Carr 137 not out). Derbyshire in the first innings made 88 (A. Staples took seven wickets for 20) and followed on, making 199 (A. Staples took four wickets for 19).’ Notts won by an innings and 121 runs. Hampshire beat Middlesex. —Hampshire in the first innings made 395 (Creese 165 not out). Middlesex in the first innings made 78 (Boxes took six wickets for 24) and followed on, making 193 (Herman took five wickets for 91). Hampshire won by an innings and 119 runs. Cambridge drew with Sussex. —Cambridge in the first innings made 330 (A. Allen 144). Sussex in the first innings made 119 (Fames took five wickets for 56) and followed on, losing five, wickets for 151. The match was drawn.
West Indies in the first innings against Minor Counties, made 299 (Edwards eight for 98). Minor Counties which made 243 in the first innings in* the second lost five for 190 and declared (Butler 50). West Indies lost four for 64 in the second innings. The match was drawn. NEXT "AUSTRALIAN MANAGER, NEW SOUTH WALES NOMINEE. SYDNEY. June 21. The New South Wales Cricket Association has decided to urge the Board of Control to appoint Mr Svdney Smith manager of the next Australian eleven It is claimed that he is the best man in Australia to aid a settlement of the bodyline dispute, having been m'anager of previous Australian teams.
