PARK BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

SEASON’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED

Thirty-five members attended the annual meeting of the Park (Haw-era) Bowling Club, held at the Borough 'C\umcuL Ohamblars' in Havefra 1/ast evening. The president, Mr. J. J. Goodwin, occupied the chair. In his report covering the year’s activities of the club, the chairman first expressed appreciation of the loyal support accorded to the committee by the members. “Deapite the strenuous times through which we are passing I am pleased to record that our membership lias suffered hut little,” said Mr Goodwin. “I would bring before you that this fact, in a. great measure, is due to our capable and energetic secretary (Mr. E. Thurston) to whom the club is deeply indebted for his untiring work in the interests of the members. Items of expend) ture have been kept down to a minimum, and by earnest endeavour, the loss sustained last year has been converted into a substantial credit for the. season.

“Opening day is always looked forward to as the real visitors’ day of the season,” the. chairman continued, “and our opening day la(jt year proved very popular among visitors. A crowded green indicated the goodwill extended bv the members of other clubs. The condition of the green both at the opening and throughout the season, was exceptionally good and reflected great credit on the green w-arden (Mr F. Quin) whose excellent work of care and sr per vi s/ioii is worthy of *tlie club’s sincere approbation.” The chairman congratulated the following winners of club competitions: champion singles, W. TV. Thomas; handicap singles, R. Woodford; Goodwin hamper, TV. W. Thomas; Brentford trophy, P. Raynor. During the season the Wednesday team in the Southern Division of the Taranaki shield competition put up a fine performance and was beaten in the final only after a great fight by the Hawera Club’s representatives. The Faster tournament - provided some ,splendid bowling .contests- and the chairman extended hearty congratulations to F. -Chadwick’s rink on its performance in reaching the finals to he beaten into second place'. He also extended congratulations to H. S. Maslin and 51. J. Squire (Havera Club) on winning the Dominion pairs championship at the last Dominion tournament. “The visits and the_ entertainment of other clubs had given members great pleasure,” Mr Goodwin continued. “Particularly do I wish to mention the visit paid to us by members of the Paritutu Club and to acknowledge with thanks the real bowling hospitality extended to our representatives on the occasion of visits to the Urenui, Pihama, Stratford, Eltham, Patea, Haw era, Manaia, Kapon.ga and Opunake clubs. The closing day, in keeping with the opening day, again was well attended by visitors from all parts of the province.” In conclusion the chairman thanked the members of the committee for their excellent work during the year, also the iearetaker (Mr. McGill) for his loyal co-operation, the ladies for their assistance in the matter of catering and the Press for its accurate reports and generous assistance. Mr. J. IV. Thomas congratulated the president on fiis report and agreed that the season had been a most successful one in every respect. In this connection he thought that .it evas only lifting- that he should pay tribute to the excellent manner in which the committee had managed the club’s affairs.

In more or less humorous vein Mr. W. W. Thomas supported the previous speaker and also complimented the club on its manner in which the funds had been conserved. In hard times such as these the club was extremely fortunate in showing such a substantial credit balance, of something over £SO. On the motion of the chairman seconded bv Mr Quin, the report and balance-sheet were adopted.

SHIELD PLAY-OFF. Mr Mason said he noticed in the report of the recent annual meeting of the Hawera Club that it was agreed that in the shield matches the four division winners be found and that they play off on one day. The present system of the South and Central Divisions playing-off and the winner meeting the winner of the North and Western Divisions’ semi-final in the final was introduced two years ago, said Sir Mason. Under the old ,system of a one-day play-off Between the four divisions there was the possibility of a draw, necessitating another day’s play whilst there was also the lisk of wet weather and the difficulty, in view of the variation in statutory halfholidays observed in the province, of selecting a day -suitable to all the teams. Air Quin: I do not think there is any hope of the Centre reverting to the old .system of play-off in the finals of the competition. One-day play is advantageous to the strong clubs. Mr Mason: Small clubs playing two rinks, lor instance, are at a disadvantage against clubs playing four rinks. Mi- Quin : I think the matter might wolL be left to the annual meeting of delegates. Twenty-five clubs will be represented and it will bo thoroughly debated. The chairman: The present system lias been very satisfactory. ”* Hie matter of a now club badge of special design was discussed and it was decided to take no action-at the present juncture. One member advocated that the subscription he reduced, but no proposal was tabled and no action was taken. On the motion of Mr J. W. Thomas a vote of thanks to the outgoing committee and the secretary was carried l»v acclamation. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £5 os in appreciation of services rendered during the year. Votes of thanks to the greenwavden, ladies,. Haw-era Borough -Council for tibe use of th,e -room, anil the j press also were- carried by acclamation, the meeting terminating with the presentation of trophies. Mrs M. Gbson’s challenge cup for championship singles was handed to W. W. Thomas

the previous winners being J. Column (1931) and A. C. Smith (1932). The Bennett and Sutton 'Cup for handicap singles was handed to R. Woolf ord and the Bremford Silver Bowl (won outright in a sealed handicap competition) to P- Ravuor.
