TALKIE ATTRACTIONS

OPERA HOUSE.

“A SUCCESSFUL CALAMITY.”

George Arliss, whimsical, shrewd and invariably polished, has perfected to a much greater degree than the majority of screen actors the subtle art of attracting the lion’s share of attention, even when he is not the central figure of a film scene. In “A Successful Calamity,” which will be’ presented at the’ Opera House, Hawera, finally to-mght, the characteristics which have made him immensely popular the world over, are much in evidence, with the result that the film, no mean production without Arliss, is assured of an enthusiastic reception. As with the majoriy of Arliss’ pictures, “A Successful Calamity” is a combination of common-sense narrative and a delicate humour, with just enough sentiment to allow the principal actor to display his unquestionable skill in representing such moods. Tije supporting cast is particularly good, there being a number of players of distinction whose work is well up to their usual standard. In particular Alary Aster is excellent as the youthful wife of a decidedly unusual millionaire. The box plans are at Miss Blake’s.

“AIARRY AIE.”

Renate Muller, the German actress with her betwitching personality and delightful accent, has won her way into the hearts of myriads of screen fans for the excellent portrayal she gave in “Sunshine Susie,” has been anxiously awaited to make her screen re-appearance. “Marry. Me,” her and latest production which is to come to the Opera. House to-morrow night for a three-night season and a matinee on Thursday at 2 p.m. is even better than the celebrated and successful “Susie.” Cast m another happiness role, Renate is called upon to render “Alarry Ale,” the theme song which trickles through the production. Supporting Miss Muller is a notable comedy combination including Harry Green, who makes his debut in British pictures, and George Robey, oelebiated London stage comedian. The story concerns a matrimonial agency conducted bv Sigrid Bernstein (Harry Green) and the delicious foolery of George Robey as AToysius Novak, a piig farmer in search of a wife.
