INSPECTION BY COMMISSIONER

To make a departmental inspection of the staff of the public service oi the mandated territory of Western Samoa and Niue the Public Service Commissioner (Mr., P. Versehaft'elt) and the Secretary of External Affairs (Mr. C. A. Berendsen) will leave Wellington by the Maui Pomare on Wednesday. They will be absent from the Dominion for about seven weeks and are due back on August 8. During Mr. Betrendsen’s absence Mr. A. B Ross, of the External Affairs Department, will act as Secretary of External Affairs and Mr. A. D. Thomson, will act as commissioner for Mr. Verschaffelt. Mr. Thomson was assistant-Public Service Commissioner from 1913 to 1920, retiring from the public service in 1920. At one time Mr. Thomson was a member of the magistracy and was a stipendiary magistrate at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. Before, his appointment to the Bench he was in the Justice Department.
