WHAKAMARA

—x (From Onr Own Correspondent.) PLAY, SONG AND DEBATE. The first presentation in public of the three clubs —Dramatic, Glee and Debating—recently formed at Whakamara was given last evening. The proEranune opened with a piano duet by Misses P. and A. Barkla, and this was followed by a clever sketch, presented by local hoys. The next section was a play reading, a. form of work which ha*s become, very popular in many centres. The Xvofk selected was a play called “The ■Bride,” Mrs FT. R. Scott being producer and Mrs E. A. Langley pianist. The cast of characters .was as follows: ‘■The Bride, Miss Joyce Irving,” Mrs J. Potter; “Bride’s Mother. Mrs Irving.” Mrs H. Le Fleming; “BridesI maid, Mis-s Judith Trving,” Miss W. { j Scott; “Miss Sparrow,” Mrs S. Buck- ' rell; “French dressmaker, Madame Grace,” (Mrs E. A. Langley; “Maid. ! Susan.” Mrs C. J. Williams; “Maid, Hilda,” Mrs J. Dobson. The charac- ! tors vvere effectively portrayed and all ! brought out clearly the points of the I ! clever dialogue. Bouquets were presented to the producer and all members of the cast. A clever sketch was also given by Mrs and Mr J. Christie. After the’ interval the Whakamara Glee Club, under the baton of Mr C. J J. Williams, took the stage and sang !in creditable style two part songs. 'They were “Drink to me only with •thine eves” and “Laugh and he 'merry.”' Miss P.
