GANGSTERS KILL FIVE

FOUR POLICE AND CONVICT. MACHINE-GUNS IN KANSAS. (United Pres- Association—By Electric'Telegraph Copyright.) KANSAS CITY, June 17. Four police officers and one escaped convict were shot down and killed by a machine-gun gang to-day in front of the Union Railway depot. It is thought the gunmen in attempting to rescue the convict killed him. There was a heavy cross-fire of two machine-guns and rifles which lasted but a few seconds. The officers, who were returning the convict to prison, were attacked so suddenly that they had no time to return the fire. The attackers escaped in an automobile. It is recalled that the convict was a close associate of the ringleaders of the Lansing penitentiary “break” on May 30. The police believe to-day’s incident was part of a. plot by southwestern desperadoes who have terrorised this section recently.
