The death of Mr. Bernhard Henry Holier, F.R.H.S., J.P., is reported in a Press Association message from Nelson. He was a prominent Mason and held a. position of the thirty-first degree in the ancient and accepted Scottish rite. He was aged 82 years. A brief, but very interesting, talk on lime and its uses was given by (Mr E. 11. Linnell, of Eltham, to farmers present at the monthly meeting of the Tokaora branch of tlio Farmers’ Union last night. He stressed the benefits derived from lime by stock and by the land and urged farmers to use it on all their pastures. A meeting of young men held at Eltham on Thursday nigjht decided to form Red Clross ctosses for first ■ aid instruction. About 15 members joined and tlfeire is a prospect of additional students. Jnistruatdon will be given by Dr. D. H. Saunders' and Sister Small and by Mr Shaw, of the Hawera Red Cross. .Mr M. Lay was appointed secretary.
A function of interest to. members of the Masonic fraternity in South Taranaki .took place in London 1 recently, when Mr Cecil J. Wray, a former Hawera resident, was installed as Worshipful Master of the New Zealand Lodge of Freemasons, London. Miss V. Laishley, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to Hawera, Patea and Waverley, was the guest of Mrs McLean, Collins Street, for two weeks. She has returned to Wellington.
A tribute to the work of Mr F. E. Clarke, honorary secretary of the Hawera Bowling Club, was paid at the annual meeting last night by the president, Mr G. A. Burgess. He said Mr Clarke was an ideal secretary and did excellent work for the club. Mr 11. T. Lovell and Miss 'Sheila Lovell returned to Hawera this w r eek after an absence of five months on a trip to England. They spent nino weeks in the Old Country, visiting many parts of South England and Wales.
A representative group of women assembled at .Hawera last evening listened to a comprehensive introduction to the Douglas Analysis and Proposals given by Miss McCarthy, of Wanganui. Charts were shown indicating the gap between production and consumption and its result in the progressively decreasing amount of purchasing power in the hands of the people. Further charts showed the contrast between a normal flow of natural wealth and the present abnormal blockage due to lack of money. The problem of prices was touched on and Major Douglas' solution —the application of a Just Price Factor and a National Dividend.
