HAWERA BOWLING CLUB

SUCCESSFUL YEAR REVIEWED. LARGEST TARANAKI MEMBERSHIP, There was an attendance of 36 members at the annual meeting of the Hawera Bowling Club, held at the pavilion last night. Mr. G. A. Burgess, president, occupied the chair: The report on the year\s work stated that the season had been a successfill one for the club, not only in the winning of the southern division of the Taranaki shield competition, but also from a social point of view. The percentage fours competition instituted this sea.son was adopted by members whole-heartedly and great, interest was taken in the competition. Half-way through the season Mr. Alfred Stone, a vice-president, resigned to take up a new position in Wanganui. Mr. Stone was a staunch member of the club and one of its keenest players. Mr. Clias. Oropton, a member of the committee, resigned durjng t/lie year, and Mir. "\V. T. Kudge was appointed in his plaice. In tiie Taranaki shield competition, three teams were entered, and the Saturday No. 2 team was successful in winning tne isouUV-rn envision junampionship.. but in the isemi-finai against Auroa (western division champions) the club lost by one point. Mr. H. S. Maslin, club champion, was successful in winning the soutliern division singles champion of champions bub was unsuccessful in the filial at Stratford. Messrs H. S. Maslin and M. J. Squire, after brilliant play in Wellington, won tlio pairs championsinp of New Zealand. All members congratulated these two champions on their achievement. xVt the Dominion tournament two links represented the club. !J. Mills. The results of the club competitions held this year were as follow: Cham pionship singles, H. S. Maslin; inn-ner-up, L. J. Bull; championship pairs E. M. Bardsley and M. J. Squire. runners-up, A. E. Mills and T. Herbert; Bisox Cup, H. S. Maslin, ruu-ner-up M. J. Squire; Bennett and Sutton Cup, S. E. Veitch, runner-up, G. J. Bayley; percentage fours, J. Champion (lead), J. Glover (scorer), W. Robertson (measurer), W. H. Canning (skip); runners-up, G. A. Burgess, D. G. Smart, J. Tidswell, E. M. Bardsley (skip). Reference was made to the need of relief to the green and the taking back from the Croquet Club, half of the area leased to it, which will accommodate four ,rinks.

The “500” evenings had been a great success and a fan* number of outsiders took part and gave assistance. More members were asked to join up and help the committee on this part oi tne work of the club. Donors of .trophies were .cordially thanked for their help. Thanks were extended to Miss May Ballantine for a handsome donation, in the form of a. leather bowling bag presented to the winner of the Biisox Cup competition, to the ladies who officated at the afternoon tea tables and to Mr. W. T. Good, who was “the father of the afternoon tea parties” and was always willing to help and finally to the committee and secretary for their conscientious efforts for the club.

FINANCIAL POSITION.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman said that there had been a good record presented and no further comment was required. The balance-sheet disclosed a sound position. The secretary* (Mr. F. E. Clarke) gave details ,of the club’s position anct the year’s working. He said the position was very satisfactory, the expenses for the year showing a decrease of £53 and the revenue an increase of £ll. The membership now stood at 100, It had been decided, he said, to pay off from the mortgage the sum of' £SO, and the funds were ill hand to do this. The secretary read extracts from the report of the Taranaki Centre, showing a very strong financial jiosition with a credit balance of £220. Hawera Club had the lionohr of the largest membership wtih 106, New Plymouth second with 99, and then Stratford 75, West End 73, Avon 62, and Park 61.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Officers were elected as follow: Patron, Mr. John Hicks; president, Mr. G. A. Burgess; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Townsley and JJ. McCormick ; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. E. C'larke; committee, Messrs T. (J. Hobbs. H S. Maslin, N. H. Murray, T. D. Kendall, M. J. Squire, E. M. Bardsley, W. Rudge, I>. G. Smart, and K. J. Fletcher; honorary auditor, Mr. A. W. Wilson; delegates to centre, Messrs G. A. Burgess, N. H. Murray, and F. E. Clarke; delegates (Sv me Shield), Messrs M. Squire, G. A. Burgess and H. Townsley; delegates (Easter tourney), Messrs J. Foy, IT. Townsley, H. S. Maslin and M. Squire. Ballots were held for the election of vice-presidents, committee and delegates to centre and Syme Shield tourney. . . , It' was decided after discussion to recommend to the committee that three divisions be played lor the shield, two for Saturday and one for Wednesday and that they be divided into teams as equal in playing strength as possible. A recommendation was made that there be one sole selector for the club. It was agreed that in the banner matches the four division winners he found and that they play oil on one day. It was recommended that in the championship singles play be oil the two-life system, and in the Bisox Cup on sealed handicap, subject to Mr. R. Hicks’ consent. The conditions governing “percentage fours” were left to the committee, and in the champion pairs and Bennett and Sutton Cup they will be the same as last year. Certain amendments to the rules, the subject of notices of motion, were approved by members. Jt was agreed to vote the honorary secretary an honorarium in appreciation of his services. Special mention was made also o! the work of the green warden (Mr. S. Adamson), who had occupied the position for several years and had

taken a pride in seeing tho green kept in perfect order. Hearty yotes of tlianks were accorded to the ladies who helped the club so materially in its social affairs, the Press', the honorary auditor (Mr. A. W. Wilson), the selector (Mr. J. Fov), the recorder (Mr. J. Champion), the committee and the chairmen.
