SWIMMING IN TARANAKI
CENTRE EXECUTIVE MEETS,
CREDIT BALANCE ON SEASON,
The executive of the Taranaki Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Club held its final meeting of the season at New Plymouth on Wednesday night, there being present: Messrs F. J. Eggleton (chairman), W. A. Brown, ,T. Devine, W. Spragg and N. Berge (Hawera), Mrs Govenlock, Misses E. L. Dowling, Allen and B. Gay ton (secretary). A report was received from the Flannagan Cup committee showing a profit of 2s 9d on the whole proceedings. The race had been a great success in every way, good entries being received and a close finish provided. The chairman congratulated the secretary of that committee,. Mr <JV Devine, on his edition t .organisation. A welcome was extended to *Mr W. A. Brown, who had been appointed to the executive as representative of the primary schools in place of Mr Shimmin.
The resignation of the secretary, Miss 8.. Gay ton, was received. Speaking of her services to the centre Mr Eggleton said that Miss Gay-ton was undoubtedly an ideal secretary. It would bo difficult To find throughout New Zealand one who had put in the amount of time and work that she had done. Miss Gayton was an asset to the province, not only as secretary to the centre, but also as an active and successful swimmer. On behalf of the executive he wished her happiness and prosperity in her new sphere of life. Letters were received from Messrs W. 11. Moycs, who was unable to attend, and R. .Clayton, congratulating Miss Gayton on her valuable work for swimming in Taranaki. Representing the Hawera Club, Mr -Spragg heartily endorsed all that Mr Eggleton had said.
‘To carry on the work of the executive until the annual meeting Mr J. Devine was elected secretary.
Congratulating the executive on a successful year Mr Eggleton said that the credit balance of £ls was in every way satisfactory when the vast amount of work done by the centre was considered. Handbooks had been printed, certificates issued, various clubs assisted financially and much other valuable work done in the cause of swimming, in the province. Mr Brown thanked the executive on behalf of the primary school headmasters for providing swimming certificates free of charge. The matter had, he said, been a cause of some anxiety among headmasters, who wanted the certificates issued in the maintenance of interest in swimming and yet could not see how they were to be paid for. It was decided that in the presentation of certificates the responsibility of distributing them w T ould rest on the delegates from the various towns.
