FORM OF THE CANDIDATES. REVIEW BY “LIMITED.” Bitterly cold weatlier at Hastings yesterday interfered with the attendance at the Hawke’s Bay meeting and iotaksator receipts were down. Only one favourite prevailed during the afternoon. Asterisca, the winner of the maiden, paid a good dividend—only £3 being invested on liis chance, in the straight-out machine. Birkbeck and Fine Acre broke down during the progress of the steeple-1 chase. Adventus lost his rider after clearing the first fence and smashed into the fence enclosing the course, badly interfering with Red Rank, who despite the set-back soon took charge to win comfortably. Miss Hastings, through being crowded, threw her rider, Matliieson, at the last fence. An inquiry into the happening was held and adjourned. Mathieson was taken to the hospital with serious chest injuries. Good fields are again c-ardod in the second day acceptances and racing should be keen to-morrow. Tn the Nursery Handicap interest will attach to the appearance of Phar Lap’s relative All Clear. Foreign Queen has a big weight, but half a furlong less to go than yesterday, and with Margaret Rose will be well supported. , High .Falutin will be fancied for the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but may fine

it hard to concede a stone and eight pounds to Mia Stella. Among the Havelock Handicap acceptors the maiden Astcrisca won comfortably yesterday. Slippery is engaged here with a, different class.
