BOOTS FOR UNEMPLOYED

OVER 100 PAIRS REQUIRED

EARLY DISTRIBUTION IN

HAWERA

With the completion of the Government manufacturing contracts Working boots will he made available shortly to Hawera registered unemployed who possess the necessary qualifications to receive them.

The Unemployment Board in Wellington has decided to issue hoots to men employed under scheme No. 5 under the following conditions: (1) The worker 'must be in receipt of employment on a rationed' basis under scheme No. 5 and must have been on the register of unemployed and in. receipt of such work for a period, of 26 weeks consecutively, namely, from November 1, 1932, to' April 30, 1933, and since the latter date; (2) the worker must work one day without pay in addition to' his scheme No. 5 ration of employment, in return for the issue of the boots; (3) such boots must be solely for the use of the applicant and must not be transferred to any other person for i monetary consideration or otherwise.

Samples of the two types of hoots decided upon by the board, have been available for inspection at the unemployment office in Hawera for the past two or three weeks, and workers eligible and desirous of participating in the hoard’s offer have already made their individual selection and have applied to the Government certifying officer (Mr J. H. Fletcher). Arrangements have been made also for the men to perform the additional work, after which they will he entitled to receive the boots. The Hawera list of eligible, applicants totals 118, but so far the list has not been completed. When all the names have been handed in the certifying officer will forward the complete order for fulfilment and the boots, on arrival, will he distributed to the men on application at the Post Office. When interviewed by a “Hawera Star” reporter vesterday the Mayor (Mr J. E/ Campbell) stated that applicants who had undertaken to work the extra day for the boots were being provided with a chit, which required the signature of the foreman at the end of the day worked. When the boots were available the applicants would be able to receive them on presentation of the chit.

During the very wet weather of the past eight weeks many of the men were found to be inadequately shod and needed strong boots at once. There were several, however, who had obtained a little seasonal work between the months of November and Anril and this debarred them from receiving immediate Government assistance. For the benefit of these men the Hawera Citizens’ Belief Committee lias agreed to subsidise purchases of boots to approximately half the cost per pair.
