Sympathy with Mr R. O. Rutherford, Patea, in the death of his- father was expressed at the meeting of the Taranaki Rugby Union last evening.

Dr. F. A. McGuire lias been elected Grand Master of the United Order oi Freemasons in New South Wales, states a Sydney cable. The retirement of Mr. George Judah Cohen, chairman of directors of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, is announced in a Sydney cable. Mr. Colien has been chairman since 1901 and has been associated with the bank for 48 years. He is regarded as an outstanding financial authority. Mr. James Ashton, M.L.C., succeeds Mr. Cohen as chairman.

Mr. E. Shaw was last night elected president of the Taranaki Chamber di Commerce at New Plymouth, on the motion of the retiring president, Mr. A. F. Sandford. It was explained that tlia vice-president last year (Mr A. M. Purser) had declined on account of pressure of business to assume the presidency in the usual way.

Captains R. G. Irving, H. Wells, A. Wilson and W. Tinsley (Australian Staff Corps), Captains W. G. Gentry, I> T. Maxwell and C. S. J. Duff (New Zealand) qualified for appointments to the staff colleges at Gamberly (England) and Quetta (India), (states a London cable. The actual selections will be announced later. The practical section of their examination for promotion was passed recently by Major C. M. Fail-brother, Captains C. F. Norton, R.. C. Reid, H. J. Keys, and P. W. Wright. Lieutenants J. G. C. Leach and W. F. Tett. of the Ist Battalion Taranaki Regiment. Confirmation of the results was received this week from the general officer commanding, Major-General W. H. Sinclair-Burgess
