ELDERLY MAN HURT FATALLY

ACCIDENT ON CROSSING

(By Telegraph- Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 12. Struck by ail engine at the Weymouth. Street crossing at 1.30 p.m., Robert Hyde Mace, aged 81, a New Plymouth resident, died m hospital at 4.1.5 p.m. His right leg was severed above tii o anlvle and . his left leg bruised. Shock caused his death. Mace, apparently, came from Ivawaroa Park, which is alongside the railway. He crossed in front of an engine proceeding from the Morley Street sheds to the .station to draw the midday express to Wanganui. It is stated" that the engine whistle sounded, buit Maoe, who was somewhat deaf, did not hear and walked on to the crossing. The engine, which wiais of the AB type, was travelling silowly and stopped within 50ft on a downward grade. It was driven by Mr F. W. Scott, of Wanganui. The crossing is not regarded as dangerous.
