HATFIELD, ENGLISH CHAMPION
It was stated in September that Jack Hatfield, the English champion, would retire at the close of the season. Hatfield has won 30 amateur championships of England, surpassing the achievement of the great Tyers. English sport writers declare that such a performance will not again be equalled for a generation. Hatfield’s record is far more meritorious than that of Tyers, for it was accomplished in the face of much more stronger foreign opposition. Further, Hatfield was inactive for five years during the Avar. A remarkable fact revealing by the Sporting Chronicle in comparing the performances of Hatfield and Tyers “It should also be appreciated,’’ says the paper, “that whereas Tyers secured twelve of his titles in spirit races, Hatfield had to be content with three, not being able to count a solitary success m the 100 yards, respite that he is a faster swimmer than Tyers was over that course. The latter may seem an incongruous statement, ignoring the development of swimming since 'fivers’ day, but that is not so pronounced in sprinting, which has only witnessed ssec improvement in England in 30 years.”
