HELD UP
AUSTRALIAN SEAMEN. MAKE DELIBERATE ATTEMPT. TO PARALYSE SHIPPING. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 29, 11.35 a.m.) mL „ . SYDNEY, Oct. 29. ine hold-up of the steamer Volumnia at Fremantle is regarded in shipping circles as a deliberate- attempt on the part of the maritime unions to prevent Ahe Commonwealth Line from running than Australian registered vessels. Owing to the paucity of homeward cargoes the Commonwealth Line found 'it necessary to reduce the sailings of cargo steamers from Australia to the United Kingdom. In order, however, to maintain the outward shipments they chartered three British vessels to load for Australian ports. The first of these to arrive is the Volumnia, which will be handed over to the owners on completion of the voyage to Newcastle to load wheat for Home. It is stated that it is the intention of the Seamen’s Union to hold up the other two chartered steamers, the Clan Monroe and Harort Mac-Lay, due m December and January respectively. A meeting of the Newcastle branch of the Seamen’s Union decided to endorse the resolution of the Sydney body that no overtime be worked.
