FALSE PRETENCES.
SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Oct. 28. The hearing of the charges of alleged false pretences against William Joseph McCarthy and Cornelius Cullen has commenced. It is alleged that they represented to- Mr C. H. Murphy, a member of the Legislative Assembly* that they had the power, and were in a position, to prevent his exclusion from the Australian Labour Party, thereby attempting to obtain £SO from him with intent to defraud him. Murphy gave evidence that he attended a meeting of a sub-committee of the executive of the Australian Labour Party in - connection with a protest which had been lodged regarding his alleged contravention of certain rules. Subsequently he attended a meeting at which he was asked to- show cause why he should not be expelled from the The meeting was adjourned. Afterwards lie received a telephone message which led him to interview the police. They gave certain advice, in accordance with which he arranged to meet Cullen and Me Cartliy. A member of the central executive was also present at- the meeting, at which it was alleged that an undertaking was reached that the balloting be so arranged that Murphy’s-expul-sion _from'the party would be v rescinded' contingent upon the payment of £SO. Murphy then arranged to meet Cullen and McCarthy in the presence of the police.
