Just after 3 o’clock this morning a fire was found'in Gow’s chemist shop, one of a block in the main street. The five had a good hold, but the brigade responded quickly and confined the outbreak to the place of origin. Considerable damage was done to the interior and the smoke penei’tatecl the adjoining shops, injuring the stocks to some extent. Chinese occupants on one side, in getting out with a woman wheeling a perambulator and a man carrying .a. baby under each arm, found the fumes almost suffocating. The surrounding facts point to incendiarism. A young man on the way home, who gave the alarm, heard running footsteps and saw two forms coming from the right-of-way at the back of Gow’s. The outbreak wa« near the back shop window, and it is believed that the place was lit there inside. Gow’s insurance is £9OO in the Mercantile and General.
