News by cable has been .received in Hastings from Melbourne announcing the death at the age of 82 of Miss Elizabeth T. Bogle, an esteemed and well-known resident of Hastings over thirty years ago. Miss Bogle med to conduct a. girls’ school in the large twostorey building standing in its owngrounds off Heretaunga Street, halfway to Stortford Lodge, and, at her death, she. still held an interest in the pioperty. She has a. brother living at Havelock North, and she has many friends in Hastings and district who will learn of her death with sincere regret. A Press Association message from Hamilton reports the death of the Rev. B. R. Roth well, ex-president of the Methodist Conference. The late Mr Rothwell was superintendent of the Masterton Circuit, and president of the conference last year. He suffered a. stroke some months ago, which necessitated his retirement from the active work of the ministry, and he was, by the conference of last March, placed on the list of permanent supernumerary ministers. He joined l the ministry of the church in 1885, from the Hamilton district, and has travelled in a number of important circuits in the. Methodist Connexion. In his early life he was closely associated with; the work among the natives of the Waikato; and in consequence of his intimate knowledge of their language was for many years the examiner of native candidates for the ministry. He was much loved by the church' throughout the Dominion, and very highly esteemed by his more immediate friends. He was an earnest temperance worker, and did much to advance social reform along that line. He is survived by his widow and two children. His daughter is Mrs Stennier, of Napier, and. liis son. Mr Eric Rothwell, is in the legal profession. His sister, who cared for him in his illness, is Nurse Rothweh, ex-matron of the Hamilton Hospital.
An unprecedented honour has been awarded to Miss Betsy Innes, of the Nelson School of Music. This young student entered last year for the examinations of the Associated Board R.A.M., R.C.M., as a violinist, and the examiner’s report upon her abilities so impressed the authorities in London that the Royal College of Music offered her free tuition for a term of two or three years. This is quite apart from the exhibitions offered annually by the Associated Board, being a direct award from the Royal College, such as has never before been made to a -New Zealand student. Miss Innes will probably leave for London next March. It is perhaps not generally known that several students who have taken up exhibitions offered by the Associated Board have not only received free tuition for three or four years in London, but. have also been generous allowances towards their living expenses. This goes to show that young musicians sent from New Zealand are held to be worth retaining even by the national institutions of England, and is a sound testimonial to the teaching thev receive here.
