CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
There were about sixty present yesterday at the second dinner arranged by the Retailers’ Association in the Carlton rooms. Mr. W. Gilbert (president) was in the chair, and the Mayor (Mr. L. A. Bone) and Mr. ,E. Dixon were also- present. After all present partook of the excellent spread put on by Mr. Hoddle, the chairman said that the two- matters to be discussed were the community lighting and the scheme for decorating the business places at Christmas. He said the former had progressed satisfactorily, and a’ contract had been prepared by the Electric Company offering to supply the light at 4s 4di per light for nine months of the year and 6s lor the r.emainincr three months. This would include every day of the week.- During the nine mouths lor six days of the week the to would be 2.1 hours lighting and on the other day ] A hours, while for the three months there .would' be 31 Hours each evening for six days aiid 1 V Hours on the remaining night. ' During the dinner a number of business men signed U j> the contract, and it is confidently expected the total of eighty lights required will be secured. Tn the matter of Christmas attractions,. in addition to the decorating seneme, Air. The chairman said that Mr. Haughton had been in Napier and ■ strongly mgerl that a mardi gras should be organised., Afi. Afaeßae stressed the, necessity of creating a spirit of good cheer amongst the people. Mr Bullock suggested the setting up of a committee to wait on. the ‘•ports, cjubs with a view to- combining for a joint attraction. The motion was carried unanimously. Committees were set up as follows:—Canvassing: Messrs Dixon (convenor) • Gilhinders,, AI. F. Purser and Lester. .Decorating: Afessrs Bullock (convenor), Strachau, Page/ Good, Ehbetts, Pavlnr and Sellar. Air- GiHanders, in consenting to make one o.f the committee, said he hoped the lighting scheme would he in ■me rat ion by the time of the E'gmont Show, and the chairman said he felt sure, this wouid.be so.
In reference to future meetings, ir was resolved to continue them monthly. and after some discussion 'a suggestion, was agreed to that the next be an evening meeting, a social gathering: The meeting then adjourned.
