The skipper of the Eliaz Davies states that while running from Wynyard to Melbourne the vessel was struck halfway across by a heavy gale and commenced to make water freely. Then the vessel made Waterloo Bay and anchored, but the anchor dragged and the vessel drifted to sea. again. Then he sent up rockets, but they were disregarded by a passing steamer. The crew: were later Junked up jtyy the steamer Chronos.

The Eliza Davies, while being towed to shelter, was ! struck by four or five mountainous seas and was swamped and sank.
