JUTLAND BATTLE.

VIEWS OF LORD JELLICOE. THE FACTS SUMMARISED. (BY TELEGRAPH PRSSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, August 1. In connection, witli telegrams from London published this ween, Viscount ./ellicoe was asked to-day to state the circumstances winch led to the Admiralty account of the Rattle of Jutland being referred to him for coinnimt. He replied that he had no objection, as the main facts were already known from statements made "in the British Parliament.

These tacts were summarised»as follows:—The Admiralty Board in 1919 appointed a committee of officers, presided over by Captain Harper, to prepare an account of the Jutland Battle. Viscount Jellicoe in 1920 was informed that the naval staff proposed to make some, alterations in the report, and he was asked to read it. He dennined. considering the report should be published without amendment, but eventually he perused the report and objected to many of the proposed amendments.

After coming to New Zealand, Viscount Jellicoe learned that the Admiralty had decided not to publish Captain Harper’s report, and the report now published was drawn up by the Admiralty’s naval staff. This report was twice sent to Viscount Jellicoet for his comments. On the first occasion he pointed out numerous inaccuracies and misstatements. The report was then returned for further comment liveable. Viscount Jellicoe found it impossible to correct the errors fully by cable, and asked for a delay to reply by mail. This suggestion was not adopted, and the publication has now been made, together with the Admiralty’s remarks, which latter have not yet been communicated to Viscount Jellicoe.
