FLOODS IN CHINA
VILLAGES DEVASTATED. THOUSANDS OF DEATHS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT PEKIN, July 15. Prolonged rains caused the swollen rivers to flood the provinces of Honan, Hunan, Anhui, and Kiangsi, devastating hundreds of villages and causing thousands of deaths and tremendous financial loss. Pekin itself is practically . isolated, except the Tientsin railway, which is threatened with inundation. In the meantime reports state that the district of Ivalgan has been utterly destroyed, and the neighbouring railway buried under debris and landslides. The inundation of Tientsin is being prevented by an afrmy of coolies, who are working feverishly to mend the weakened dykes. These constitute tl\e danger point for all the cities, because of the vast volumes of water. Engineers propose drastic measures to save Tientsin.; They suggest cutting some dykes, when the water will overflow the rice lands between Tientsin and Pekin.
