ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL. CHINESE TEAM ARRIVE. ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION .) WELLINGTON, July 15. An enthusiastic welcome was extended t 6 the members of the Chinese Uni. versity soccer team, which arrived today by the Makeno from Sydney. Although they appear lighter than the average New Zealand player, the visitors are of a fine stamp and give promise of interesting displays. All were well on arrival, and they have been looking forward to their Visit. The manager, Mr. A. E. Dome, stated that the average age of the team wag 23 years, and the average, weight approximately 10 stone. The team' w T as selected from all parts of China, and the men had never seen each other until they met on the boat. It was hoped, after a few games, to attain a high degree of combination and give displays that would’ he. worthy of the standard of soccer in China. The team was light, but fast. In China the men must play the ball and not the man. They should not he at a disadvantage in New Zealand if the code was. plaved with that interpretation. The members ofi the- team play their first match of -the tour at Masterton on Thursday.

THE LEAGUE CAME. THE ENGLISH TEAM. f DUNEDIN, July 15. The Rugby League’s difficulty in arranging for a ground for the matches of the English team against Canterbury here, on August 9 and 13, was settled by a decision of the Soccer executive last evening to grant the use of Culling Park; for these dates, ■subject to the payment of 10 per cent, of the gross gate takings at each match. RUGBY City team to play Meremere on Show Grounds at Hawera to-morrow, at 2 p.m.: Jones, Weir, Hammond, Coburn, Hoddinott, Champion, Hall, Roberts, Rosewarne, Purser, Smith, West, Hardlev, Poster, Hoddinott; emergencies, Townsend, Jarrett, Hook, McKenna.
