(To the Editor.) * lr 'T* n .^ our issue of June 28 appears a very interesting, instructive, and (will be) historical word-painting' of the old Mountain Road Maori trail, from the + n lr - W; , A - Q- To the new rrnai the article may not appeal so effectively, but to one .who has traversed portion of the trail, with its deep chasms and dense bush every word brings back scenes of the past that can never he replaced— at least under the white man. Here is Mr \\. A. Q. giving us authoritative information of the troubles encountered hy .the Imperial troops in their historical march around the mountain penetrating primeval forest with troops and baggage during torrential ra in. Who knows hut 2400 years hence some miter will be quoting Mr. W. A O’s descriptive article when the early davs of Taranaki come tq> be re-written at the date mentioned,: and- like “Aristides ’ in hi s naval battles of same date (June 28) have contradictory accounts to work on, or, say, the naval oattle of Salanns—no details. But here is data by an eye-witness of the scene and country, but not of the march I hope Mr. W. A. O. will continue to give us some more of his interesting articles, as lie has done in the past, which have been and are appreciated by 1 AN OLD RESIDENT.
