NEW SETTLERS.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE. THE GROUP SYSTEM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPBRIGHT. SYDNEY, July 3. The annual report of t-lie New Settlers’ League stated that- during the year sixty-six boats had arrived front overseas carrying a total of 5351 nominated migrants'. Of these 649 boys, 287 domestics and 3-13 others paid the full passage and registered at the League’s office. These were all placed satisfactorily in rural districts. The president. Sir Arthur Rickard, said the results for the past year were disappointing. The best type of immigrant was furnished by the boys, and New South Wales should have no- difficulty in absorbing from 300 to 500 monthly. A West Australian delegate outlined the system of group settlement, and said it was destined to be a huge success. The present Minister for Lands considered that 85 per cent, of the settlers would be successful. There were 104 settlers’ groups now established and five were West Australian. The League' carried a motion urging on the Government the desirability of the group migration and the settlement of families on the lines of those adopted by West. Australia. The State Government- has notified the British .migration authorities it i« now prepared to accept 500 settlers with a capital of £SO each. When they arrive it is proposed to place them on land where they will obtain experience before taking up land of their own.
