They went out fishing in a small dingy and when returning to shore the heavy surf upset the boat throwing Seymore on top of Peters. The next sea put the boat on top of them, Peters swallowing a lot of water in liis effort to reach the surface ; however, they managed to reach the shore in safety. Some time since we directed the attention of the Railway Department to the great risk to which public life is exposed by the authorities not placing a man at the crossing in Heretaunga street whilst trains are passing. A waggon and team with a man in charge had rather a narrow escape from being smashed by last night's express, owing either to the man's carelessness or to his not hearing the whistle, which was blown in the ordinary way. The horses had to be whipped to get the waggon clear of the train, and a smash up was only averted. An accident may not occur at this crossing for a long time, it is possible it may never occur, but it is most unquestionably the duty of those responsible to place a porter on the spot with power to stop all traffic during the passage of trains, and until this is done there will always be danger to people passing. The city of Omaha, Nebraska, is shortly to hold an international exhibition. Ferris Wheels and Eiffel Towers have become commonplace, and the organisers have another scheme for attracting to Omaha the Americans of the north and south pot forgetting those of the centre. This consists of a mammoth metallic umbrella planted in the centre of the exhibition. The umbrella will not only protect visitors from the rain and sun, but will afford them the sensation of a short balloon ascent. From each rib are to be suspended cars, 50 in all, with a capacity to seat six or eight persons in each. At intervals the umbrella will be closed by hydraulic power so as to allow, visitors to mount the cars, and when all are on board will slowly open again, lifting in the air its burden of 350 human beings. The opening is to be followed by a complete revolution of the fj gatnp," allowing the visitors time to enjoy a panoramic view at the city and the great plain around it.
