The Furniture Union has decided to appeal to the Arbitration Court against the Conciliation Board's award on all the clauses except overtime.
The Public Trustee has declined to provide the costs in the Horowhenua case on the ground that there are no funds from which to provide them. A writ to be placed in the Sheriff's hands, which practically amounts to a distress warrant, will be served to-day. Describing the mania for cricket which has seized on the Samoans, the Rev. Mr Newell, in the course of a lecture, cited a case in which he bad to administer medicine to a player. There were 102 on one side, and the game went on for a fortnight, at night as well as day. The losers had to supply the winners with food, and when the game finished no vegetables were to be procured. In consequence of this excess the Church was obliged to condemn cricket. Mr Meadow, who represented New Zealand at the Brisbane Exhibition, says it was not a financial success, only 320,000 visitors paying. He found the bulk of the agricultural machinery was of New Zealand make, and letter adapted to the work than English or American.. In every class the New Zealand exhibitors came out on top of the prize lists. Id the Divorce Court, in the case of Hendle v. Hendle (husband's petition) a decree nisi was granted. Mrs Rubby John, wife of one of the Assyrian traders whose goods were seized by the Customs, is suing the Collector for damages on the ground that the goods were hers and not her husband's. A cable received by the Department of Agriculture, from the Agent General, dated London, yesterday, states that butter is quoted at 100s per cwt. with the market very dull ; cheese 47s per cwt. market steadv.
