SWIMMING CONTEST.

Tbe first of the three swimming contests between Tyers and Percy Cavill was held at Blackpool, and was witnessed by thousands of spectators. The sea was rough with a fresh wind. The betting was two to one on Tyers. The Englishman got away the quickest and led for the first quarter of a mile, when Cavill went to the front and led for the remainder of the distance, winning by 40 yards. The course, which is actually 1815 yards, was covered in 24min. 26secs. Cavill kept a beautiful course out to sea, while Tyers had the course towards the shore, and was troubled by the surf and the sun hi his eyes. Tyers entered a protest that Cavill went outside the finishiug flags, but the judge disallowed the protest and awarded the race to Cavill. Tyers has refused to swim the other long distance sea race arranged with Cavill, but offers to swim him a series of matches ranging from 100 yards to a mile in still water.
