A SMOKING ROOM.
[To the Editor.] Sir, —I see by your report of the annual meeting of subscribers to the Athenamm that it is proposed to erect a room for the convenience of the smokers of Hastings. As usual the comfort of the men is to be considered, and female subscribers are to be asked to subsidise a movement that will keep their husbands from home. If the institution is in funds the committee might find many better ways of reducing their wealth. The present reading-room is a comfortable one, and it would be throwing money away to further pamper the " lords of creation." Let a poll of subscribers be taken, and I am certain the majority will decide against a selfish proposal like that made at the annual meeting. Forty pounds' worth of new books might adorn the shelves, but the money will be thrown away in pampering the males if the proposal is carried out. —I am, &c., Female Subscriber.
