LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Although the weather was not propitious there was a big meet with the hounds at Frimley to-dav. The Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society have decided to stage the comedy " All that glitters " and the farce " Turn him out " at an early date. The Wesleyan congregation held a very successful reunion in the Oddfellows' Hall last night. Several vocal and instrumental items were rendered and a large audience went home after spending a very pleasant evening. Eev. Mr Martin presided. The Times confirms the satisfactory solution of the trouble between Mr Tom Pollard and the proprietors of the Napier theatre, and states that " The Firm's" companies do not intend tocarry out their threat to leave Hawke's Bay out of their tours. After hearing lengthy evidence in the Lys-Scott assault case yesterday afternoon the hearing was adjourned till to-day at 2 p.m. On the Court resuming Mr Joseph Rivers was called as a witness for ihe defence, but his evidence was of a hostile character. He was still under examination when our reporter left. Three hundred tons of rabbits have (the Tuapelca Times says) been sent away by rail from Lawrence since the commencement of the season. That, calculated at 700 rabbits to the ton, which is under the mark, means that over 200,000 rabbits have been despatched out of this district, through Lawrence alone. This may roughly be estimated as bringing into the district served by the Lawrence railway station, an amount of over J61500 cash. Besides this, Waitaliuna Gullv and Clark's Flat have also been exporting rabbits, so that the value of the rabbit export trade may be considered as bringing fully £2500 into circulation in the district, if not more. One of the features of the local festivities is the series of socials promoted in connection with the Catholic Church. Last winter these were very largely patronised, and were in every way successful. The first social of the present season will be held in the Princess Theatre on Wednesday, 21st inst. Mrs M'Namara is in charge with a representative committee, and already preparations are well advanced for a successful gathering. The supper will be prepared regardless of expense, and everything else will be furnished on f. similar scale. The stage will be fitted up as a drawing-room, so that non-dancers will be well provided for. Under such capable management the affair is certain to be a huge success.

Skating takes place at the Band Hall this evening. A meeting of the creditors of Captain Blake is called elsewhere. The Salvation Army hold reception meetings to Captain Renshaw to-morrow. Five Justices of the Peace have sent in their resignations lately. A four-roomed house with three acres'of land is advertised to let. Tenders close with Mr G. Sollitt on Monday at noon for the erection of a woolslied at Sherenden. Accounts against the late L. M. Schaeffer must be rendered to Mr G. Ebbett on or before Saturday 17th inst. Mr Dewsnap has a lot of lettuce plants which he will be happy to distribute persons whose gardens were injured by the late floods. An election notice for two lay representatives for the electoral district of Hastings, in the Diocesan Synod of Waiapu, is announced elsewhere. Peculiar requests are perferred in the Law Courts from time to time. A few days ago a man actually applied to a court in America for an injunction to prevent a certain individual from courting his sister! He objected to the man, hence the application. At Port Chalmers yesterday the Rev. D. R. Fisher was charged with neglecting to vaccinate a child 10 months old. Defendant set up the defence that he considered it would endanger the child's health and pointed out that a Royal Commission at Home recommended that when the parents objected to vaccinate the law should not be enforced. The J's.P. said they had only to deal with the law as they found it, and imposed a fine of 20s and costs. This is the second time Fisher has been fined.
