LOCAL AND GENERAL.

There will be no publication of the Standard to-morrow. Already crowds of visitors are flocking into town for the holidays, and for tomorrow's races there promises to be a record attendance. Messrs Beck and Co. s establishment in Station street is in line with the Jubilee celebrations. A full sized transparency of Her Majesty is displayed in the window. and the gaslight effect is very pretty. The New Zealand Times management is to be highly complimented upon the excellent literary work in the Record Keign supplement on Saturday. As a history of the past 60 years it is a splendid journalistic record.

It is understood that the Magpie Minstrels have been requested to repeat their recent Hastings performance in Napier at an early date, in aid of the widows' and orphans' fund. On Wednesday at Farndon Park the Hawke's Bay Gun Club hold their annual meeting. As some of the best shots in the colony are engaged the sport should be good, and the attendance is certain to be

large. Connoisseurs in tea have spoken very highly of Lipton's blonds of tea introduced into Hawke's Bay by Messrs Jones and Koko. At the races the celebrated Mount View blend will be used by Mr li. Winsley. This is a tea that gives universal satisfaction wherever used.

At St. Matthew's Church yesterday the Itev. J. Hobbs, referring to the celebration of the Ilecord Reign in Hastings, expressed regret that the citizens, instead of taking over the Qneen s Park, were not in a position to purchase the H.B. JockeyClub's racecourse, and so alleviate the gambling curse, which was growing at an alarming rate in this colony. It looks as though Messrs Williamson and Musgrove are determined to carry out their threat of in future leaving Napier out of the tour of all their princpal companies. The Matsa Vaudeville Company, which has just concluded a big season in Auckland, and which would in the ordinary course of events have visited Hawke's Bay, is billed to open in Wanganui to-morrow night. This is the first time the " Firm " has sent a company down the West Coast. For the Jubilee procession to-morrow morning members of the Foresters, Oddfellows, and Hibernian lodges and the Fire Brigade are requested to meet at nine o'clock. The schoolchildren will meet at their rooms and will be marched to St. Matthew's Hall, where the procession will form up preparatory to making a move to Queen's Square at 9.30. All citizens are invited to join the demonstration.

There was a good muster of Volunteers at Church Parade yesterday morning. Under the command of Captain Lewis and headed by the Town Band the corps marched to St. Matthew's Church, where a most impressive service was conducted by the Rev. J. Hobbs. The altar was adorned with the Imperial flags, adorned with gold lettering showing the words, " God save the Queen." The service was fully choral, and a strong choir under the conductorsliip of Mr H. H. Hunt, rendered several excellent items, including Jackson's beautiful petting of the " Te I)eum " and " Jubilate.' The National Anthem was sung by the whole congregation with orchestral accompaniment. Rev. Mr Ilobbs preached a stirring discourse on the Record Reign. The evening service was also largely attended. Dr Pascall's Pills cure Indigestion, Heartburn, Costiveness, Headache, Furred Tongue, "Wind, and all symptoms arising from a disordered state of the liver, stomach, or kidneys. They cleanse the bowels, and act like a charm in removing all impurities from the blood, toning and refreshing the rvhole system. Is 6d and 2s 6d per box. Agent—A. Eccles Napier and Hastings.—Advt. To-day is the shortest day. There is every prospect of magnificent weather for the Jubile celebrations. Mr Cowlrick advertises special meals for race days. Archbishop Redwood arrived from Waipawa this morning and is the guest of Father Smyth. At the Catholic Church yesterday the "Te Deum " was sung by the choir, and Father Smyth made appropiate remarks with reference to the Queen's Record Reign. In the main street on Saturday night a fracas took place, a well-known tailor being the victim of a violent assault. Severe injuries" were received on the face. It is expected that the outcome will be a charge at the S.M. Court. The Hon. J. Carroll arrived from Wellington by the express on Saturday evening. He intended spending the Record Reign week in Gisborne, but as there was no steamer leaving in time he has decided to put in the holidays in Hastings. The Minister has accepted an invitation to attend the Jubilee ball to-morrow evening. The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Hastings Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held on Saturday evening, the N.G. Bro. Arthur Weliwood, in the chair. The business was chiefly of a routine character. A brother who was in indigent circumstances was granted £5. The Provincial Grand Master, Bro. George Love, installed the following officers for the ensuing term: —G.M. Bro. Arthur Weliwood ; N.G. Bro. W. C. Britten; Y.G. Bro. Sam Brooking; Guardian Bro. Upsall Gray; E.S., Bro. F. Bridge ; R.S. to N.G Bro. Dan Harper, P.G. For the Jubilee Ball to-morrow evening the Princess Theatre has been decorated on the most lavish scale, and it is certain that a finer ballroom it would be difficult to find in the whole of New Zealand. The demand for tickets has been extraordinary, and it is expected that over 150 couples will be present. It has been suggested that while the decorations are up a juvenile ball should be held, say on Friday evening.* A low price might be charged for admission and any proceeds would be acceptable to the widows and orphans fund. The Bowling Club committee, by accepting this suggestion, will earn the thanks of a very large number of juveniles, who always enjoy a dance.

Military Sports at Napier to-mor-row are certain to draw a large number of Hastings residents, and from what can be gleaned none will be dissatisfied with the outing. The management hasgone to a deal of trouble in forming an attractive programme. At 9'30 a.m. a procession will leave the Marine Parade for the Recreation Ground. At ll'BO there will be a grand parade of Imperial and Colonial officers and Volunteers. A Royal Salute (60 guns) will be fired and a feu-de-joie will be followed by singing of the National Anthem. The sports are timed to commence at 12.15 p.m. Trains run from Hastings and country towns at convenient times.
