The School Committee met last evening ana decided to grant Jubilee holidays to the children on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next. This afternoon the proposed recreation ground committee are engaged inspecting the Stortford Lodge ground with a view of making a report thereon. The Hastings Rifles-are in active training in view of the military sports in Napier on Tuesday next. Last evening some very good work was done. We acknowledge receipt of the report of the nineteenth annual meeting of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, M.U., Hawke's Bay, neatly printed in pamphlet form by Mr A. A. George. Mr J. Collinge begs to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the following amounts for the Flood Relief Fund :—Mr Tate, £1 ; L. Cooper, M. S. Symonds, A. Sutherland, and Harold Chambers, 5s each ; I). Mr Charles Hughes, of Central Buildings, returned from Australia yesterday, looking very much better for his trip. Mr Hughes noticed a wonderful inprovement in Melbourne since his last visit there, some very handsome buildings having been erected during the past few years.

Several pigeon owners in the district are complaining of depredations on their dove cots by unprincipled scoundrels, who hope to be able to dispose of their spoil to the management of the forthcoming pigeon match. Mr Galleon nearly caught one of these rascals the other evening about 8 o'clock and gave chase, but the culprit escaped. It is to be hoped that those in charge of the Ilawke's Bay Gun Club will exercise caution in dealing with persons of a suspicious nature. "Without doubt the most amusing joke at last night's entertainment was the down fall of a false moustache from Mr V.Roach's upper lip. Many among the the audience could see that the false " mo.'" was dissatisfied with its resting place, or that the " stickjaw " was in tow with the gods. The inevitable soon happened and the house was fairly brought down. Like Bourbaise in " Paul -Jones," " just as he began to mash he began to moult." This joke, although it did not win the guinea, fairly took the cake.

The Fahiatua Herald appears in a new garb this week, the energetic proprietor having considerably enlarged the journal. It is now one of the most attractive looking newspapers in the North Island, and reileets the greatest credit on Mr A. Baillie, who has brought it on by leaps and bounds during the past four or five years. A feature of the paper is its independent attitude on all subjects. Its Wellington correspondent, " Penloo," contributes smart chatty letters weekly, and the literary staff altogether is far ahead of that of journals of much greater pretentions.

Eccles' Quinine and Iron Tonic eontains Quinine and Iron in a high state of purity, and is the most agreeable strengthening, and efficient agent yet discovered. 2s Gd per bottle. To be obtained from A. Eccles, chemist, Napier and Hastings, and at all leading country stores —Advt.

G. H. Vickers and Co. sell at their rooms to-morrow fruit, produce, furniture, etc.

A very cold blast came over the district shortly after noon to-day, the barometer falling several degrees in the course of half-an-liour.

Dividends in the Heretaunga Co-opera-tive Dairy Coy., Ltd., are now payable on application to the manager any day before 2 p.m.

Unless more enthusiasm is thrown into the local proposals for the celebration of the Record Eeign, Hastings will be behind even the smallest town in the colony. Why is this thus ? The reflection from the West Give fire this morning was distinctly noticed in Hastings, but owing to the distance the members of the Fire Brigade were not called out.

The.' make up' of the Magpies last night was greatly admired by the audience, and Mr A. Hyde is to be complimented on the success of this department of the business. The characters in the farce were marked up to perfection, and every thanks is due to Mr Hyde. Wellington warehouse prices are in every instance charged by the D. I. C. when executing orders received by post. Those of our residents who want really nice fashionable goods need not hesitate about communicating with the D. I. C., Wellington. Complete furnishing is now a special feature of the D. I. C., and those who anticipate requirements in this direct tion will be supplied with catalogues and estimates post free.—Advt.
