THE STATE OF EGYPT.
THE KHALIFA MAKING PREPARATIONS FOR A CONFLICT. AN EARLY ADVANCE TO BE MADE AGAINST HIM. f Per Press Association. —( oj/yriyht.) Loxuox, May 29. A Router's message from Cairo states that the Khalifa has massed 10,000 camc-Is at Omdt.rman, in the Eastern Soudan, north-west of Khartoum, and just above the confluence of the White and Biue Niles. A great conference of Dervish chiefs will be held there in the middle of June. The message also states that the British officers have been ordered to return to the Soudan at the end of June, an advance upon Berber being probable. Recent advic- s stated that the Egyptian expeditionary forces against the Dervishes would advance upon Abu Hamed, between the four Eh and fifth cataract of the Nile, in July, but apparently an earlier movement has been decided upon. Berber lies between Abu Hamed and Omdurman, above the worst of the river cataracts. The advance thence to the Dervish headquarters will be comparatively easy.
